Acne (acne vulagris) is a skin condition that occurs when the hair follicle becomes clogged with sebum (oil) and dead skin cells. As the follicle enlarges, the wall can rupture and bacteria enters the area. This results in inflammation and a pimple occurs. If the inflammation is deeper, a cyst will develop. Acne may develop due to a change in hormone levels, poor gastro-intestinal health, poor diet, stress, medications/drugs, comedogenic skin products and cosmetics.

Acne Scarring
Acne scars are a result of significant trauma to the skin and lead to scar tissue. Acne Scars cause a textural change to the skin with depressed/indented areas. The ultimate goal for treating acne scars is to improve the appearance of the area, resulting in a smoother, more even complexion. Professional treatments available to treat this form of scarring include: IPL, Light Therapy, Skin Needling (ECIT, Rejuvastamp, Dermaroller), Venus Viva Nano-Fractional R.F, specialised Chemical Peels (superficial and medium depth peels), DMK Professional Treatments.
Redness left behind after acne breakouts is known as “couperose”. This is damaged capillaries within the skin that is caused by trauma and can be treated with professional treatments including IPL, Light Therapy, Venus Viva Nano-Fractional R.F and DMK Professional Treatments. Darkened areas that are left behind after acne is referred to as Post Inflammatory Hyper-Pigmentation (P.I.H.P) and occurs when a client has a greater amount of melanin (pigment) present within the skin. Olive and Darker skin types can be treated for P.I.H.P, however a great deal of care must be taken to ensure no further pigmentation occurs. At Karen Bowen Dermal Therapist we strongly advise the application of a quality pigment inhibitor prior to commencing professional treatments. Our clinic offers high quality pigment inhibiting products to sufficiently prepare our clients’ skin. Pigmentation can be treated with professional treatments including:
- Specialised Chemical Peels (Dermamelan Peel, Cosmelan Peel, and other superficial and medium depth peels)
- IPL
- Light Therapy
- Venus Viva Nano-Fractional R.F.
