IPL vs Laser for Pigmentation: Which Is Right for Your Skin?
Sun spots, freckling, uneven tone and melasma are some of the most common skin concerns in Perth — and no wonder, given the WA sun. When you start looking for treatment, two options come up again and again: IPL and laser. They're related but not the same, and the right choice depends on your skin and your specific pigmentation.
What IPL does
IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) uses a broad spectrum of light rather than a single focused wavelength. That light is absorbed by excess melanin, breaking up pigmented areas so they darken, rise to the surface and gradually flake away over the following one to two weeks, revealing more even-toned skin.
IPL is especially good for:
- Diffuse, widespread pigmentation and sun damage across an area like the face, chest or hands.
- Combined concerns — because it also targets redness and helps overall skin rejuvenation.
- General tone and radiance, not just individual spots.
What laser does
Laser uses a single, focused wavelength, which allows more precise, targeted treatment. This can make it well suited to more defined or stubborn pigmentation, and it allows a clinician to control depth and intensity carefully.
So which is better?
Neither is universally "better" — they're different tools for different jobs. The right choice depends on:
- The type of pigmentation (surface sun spots vs deeper or hormonal pigmentation like melasma).
- Your skin type — some treatments need careful settings on deeper skin tones.
- Whether you have other concerns (redness, texture, ageing) you'd like to address at the same time.
Melasma in particular needs a careful, considered approach, as the wrong treatment can sometimes worsen it. This is exactly why an in-person skin assessment matters.
