Tattoo Removal Aftercare: How to Heal Faster & Avoid Scarring
Here's something people underestimate: what you do between sessions matters almost as much as the laser itself. Good aftercare protects your skin, lowers the risk of scarring, and actually helps your body clear the ink faster. The good news is it's simple.
The first 24–72 hours
Right after a session, the treated area behaves a bit like mild sunburn — warm, pink, possibly a little swollen, and sometimes with tiny blisters or frosting. This is normal. To look after it:
- Keep it cool. A cold compress (not ice directly on skin) eases heat and swelling.
- Leave any dressing on as advised by your clinician.
- Don't pick, scratch or pop any blisters or scabs — this is the single biggest cause of scarring.
- Keep it clean and dry, washing gently with lukewarm water and patting dry.
The following days and weeks
- Moisturise with the product your clinician recommends to support healing.
- Avoid soaking the area — skip swimming pools, spas and long baths until healed.
- Skip intense exercise for a day or two if the area is tender, as heat and sweat can irritate it.
- Avoid tight clothing rubbing on the site.
Protect it from the sun — this one's non-negotiable
Sun exposure is the enemy of tattoo removal. UV on healing skin raises the risk of pigmentation changes and can force you to delay your next session. Keep the area covered or protected with SPF 30+ whenever you're outside — especially important under the strong WA sun.
Habits that help your body clear ink faster
Because your immune system does the work of flushing away shattered ink, supporting it helps:
- Stay well hydrated.
- Don't smoke — smoking is shown to slow tattoo removal significantly.
- Move your body with gentle exercise to support circulation.
- Eat well and sleep — your immune system does its best work when you're looking after yourself.
When to check in
Some redness, swelling and scabbing is expected. But if you notice signs of infection — spreading redness, heat, pus or fever — contact your clinic promptly. Erring on the side of asking is always fine.
