Does Skin Needling Work for Acne Scars?

Does Skin Needling Work for Acne Scars?

If you've dealt with acne, the scars it leaves behind can feel like the final insult — long after the breakouts have settled. Skin needling (also called microneedling or collagen induction therapy) is one of the most talked-about treatments for acne scarring. So does it actually work? For many types of scarring, yes — and here's how.

How skin needling works

Skin needling uses very fine needles to create tiny, controlled micro-injuries in the skin. That sounds counterintuitive for treating scars, but it's the point: these micro-channels trigger your skin's natural repair response, stimulating the production of collagen and elastin — the proteins that give skin its structure and smoothness.

Over a series of treatments, that fresh collagen helps to remodel scar tissue, softening indentations and improving skin texture and tone.

Which acne scars respond best

Skin needling is most effective for atrophic (indented) acne scars — the rolling and boxcar scars that leave the skin looking uneven. It's also excellent for general skin texture, enlarged pores and dullness.

It's less suited to:

  • Deep "ice pick" scars, which may need combination treatments.
  • Active, inflamed acne — needling isn't done over an active breakout.
  • Raised (keloid) scars, which behave differently and need a different approach.

This is why an assessment matters — to confirm needling is right for your scar type before you invest.

How many sessions will you need?

Acne scarring generally needs a course of treatments — often around 3 to 6, spaced roughly 4 to 6 weeks apart — because you're gradually building new collagen over time. Results develop steadily rather than overnight, with skin continuing to improve for months after your final session as collagen remodels.

What to expect afterwards

Expect some redness, similar to mild sunburn, for a day or two after each session. Most people return to normal activities quickly. As with all treatments, sun protection is essential afterwards — especially in Perth — to protect the healing skin and your results.

Getting the best outcome

Results depend on technique, needle depth chosen for your scars, and pairing treatment with the right skincare. In experienced hands, skin needling is a safe, effective way to visibly soften acne scarring and restore smoother, healthier-looking skin.
